I ventured out on to Lake Rotorua in the morning. I was not has early as I like owing to the body recovering from the xmas food. 7:00am and I was heading out from Hamurana, trolling down to ‘The Pins’. I was using a ‘brownie’ lure with a darkish fly teaser, 30m trace tied to my Deep Water Express which is only about 10m long. About 2/3 rds of the way down I got a strike, not a good solid hit though. There were a few good runs before I managed to get the fish close to the boat but lost it with out seeing it. I got another strike within a couple of minutes but again lost it after one run.

I continued to troll down to 'The Pins’ without any further action. The lake had a slight swell coming from the south which was not what was forcasted. There were other boats around me and they did not seem to be landing any fish. I turned back towards Hamurana and changed to my fly line with a ‘Rotorua Special’ but sadly no srikes.

The Fishing Inspector was out and I was stopped and licence checked and a short questionaire answered before continuing on. I did a couple of beats and had one more ‘touch’. I topped up my fuel tank and decided to head back to the ramp switching back to my ‘brownie’.

There were 2 boats working out in front of Hamurana and I decided to call it quits and headed for the ramp. I was surprised with a strike and managed to land a Rainbow of about 2lbs. By now it was about 11:00am so I thought I had better head home.

I ventured out on to Lake Rotorua last saturday morning (29/11/08) from the Ngongotaha boat ramp. Sadly it was not a good morning fishing, as I only manged to catch weed. So the next morning I was up early and went out to the Hamurana boat ramp by the stream. Conditions were good and I managed to land my first fish by 6:30, but it was way too small so was released.

I continued to troll towards ‘The Pins’ and about 2 thirds of the way there I hooked a very nice fish. The performance that it put on trying to throw the lure was impressive and many times I thought that I had lost it. I did eventually land a very nice 3 1/2 lb rainbow.

I continued down towards the pins and a few minutes later hooked another that also went nuts trying to throw the lure. I also manged to land that one which was about 2 1/2 lbs. That was my lot for the morning so I headed back to the ramp and then home.

They were hooked on a trafficlight tassie with a small smelt fly about 40cms above it.

2 nice trout

This weekend (6/12/08) I was up early and on the water at about 6am again at Hamurana. I again trolled down towards ‘The pins’ trolling my trafficlight setup. In the similar spot as last week I got a very solid hit that just took line. I killed the motor and started to play the fish. It stayed down deep and kept making good solid runs.

I eventually got it close to the boat and then realized that it was a very nice fish. There was no leaping into the air, just good solid runs. I was beginning to wonder if I could even get it to the boat and I was also concerned on how I would get it into my net. Eventually I was able to lead it into the net, but I had to put my rod down and use two hands to lift it into the boat.

It turned out to be a good solid fish of about 7.5lbs, the biggest that I have caught for many years. I also managed to land another smaller fish, but released that one to grow bigger.
