Yesterday, Mark and I decided to go surfcasting at Otamarakau. It has been many many months since we have been there.
It was a very cold day but sunny and with a southerly blowing should be ideal. We left Rotorua about 1.45PM and arrived at the beach to find in very calm and a number of people fishing.
We drove down the beach to our spot a and quickly proceeded to get the 2 long lines in the water and our surfcasters out.
We managed to catch a number of small kahawai and mullet on the rods and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon waiting to bring in the long lines.
6:30pm, and we started to pull in the first line. Mark noted that there was something on the line and was possibly big. It was not long before the first fish hit the beach, a few nice big fat kahawai and a gurnard was the catch. The big fish had also caused a big tangle in the line which took some time to clear. Tricky in the dark using head lamps.
The next line had a good catch of gurnard, 1 small scnapper which we put back and another kahawai.
All in all a most enjoyable afternoon.

There is a nice beach about an hours drive from Rotorua, called Otamarakau. It is on the coast road to Whakatane. A nuber of us when we get the time travell over ther to do a little fishing.
We normally will put out two long lines, these have 25 hooks and are paddled out in a kayak about 500m from the shore. We then will set up our surfcasters and spend the next few hours trying to catch some fish. Over the last few years we have had good success and have always come home with a meal or two.
The picture on the right top corner is that beach.
I will track down some pictures of our catches and post them a a later date.
